Pre-covid I stayed at the Phoenix Hotel. It's a 10 min drive from the airport and has free shuttles to trains as well as the airport. It's pretty basic but definitely did the job.
As a bonus it's an easy walk to a genuine (as far as I can tell) Thai restaurant (beware the chilli levels!) which I now visit every stopover in BKK. Here's the restaurant google maps link :

That was my "to go hotel" before flight or 1am arrival to BKK. It was always hit or miss with the rooms. Some of them were refurbished and some of them I wouldn't even put my head on the pillow. But for $20 a night with airport shuttle and breakfast it was a bargain. You could get a suite for $40 with a balcony
Used to be favorite hotel for plane spotters. Planes flying by the hotel 24/7. As the OP said, there are local restaurants within couple of minutes walk.
