We could go all round the houses every time on this, but it seems to me that key points include:-
1. You thereby do a very good job of making it impossible for non-status families or groups (sometimes couples) to sit together - they all get middle seats splattered all over the aircraft.
2. The people who get the best seats are the people who book earliest - ie usually the people who've paid the least.
