Yes, I am familiar with the Apex suite. I have flown KE. I do like the idea of it, but I am not sure I like the execution that I got from KE. First the cabin was way TOO WARM! Second, the padding on the seats were firm. Good for sitting but can be bad for laying down, especially without a mattress pad.
I think the JL Apex suites are narrower than KE, right? I am not tall or stout, by western standards. I think I'll fit well into small-ish seats.
No, JAL is not transitioning from Apex to Skysuite III. Initially SSIII was meant for the Asia regional operations, but it has spread out a bit more than that. But the aircraft delivered are not being reconfigured. The interesting question is what seats will new 787-9 deliveries get, and what seats will the internationally configured A350-900 get.
JAL will give you an air weave mattress pad for the Apex Suites.
