CO always acknowledged, sometimes even with some miles and a card. UA never.
Frontline UA employees (gate agents, flight attendants) have this information avail to them, and it's up to the employee to acknowledge the occasion. I've gotten the long spiel of happy birthday and "thank you for being 1K" onboard.
