"Free change on day" seems the appropriate buzzwords and I would expect BA staff in LHR to know about it. The BA Engagement Centre could also have done this change. But on the one occasion I had a similar difficulty to yours, I just said "OK, let's not argue about this, go ahead and charge this card" - then to the exasperation of the agent the ticket duly re-issued to the new flight with zero charge. But had you paid up then it's a clear refund case if it was an FCOD eligible change. The slight problem with buying outside BA channels is that you always wonder if you are getting something like a consolidation ticket, which can legitimately be said not to benefit from standard terms and conditions.
