Ended up selecting 1A for me (Emerald status) and 1D for my travel partner (no status) as I couldn't select 1AC. Didn't call JAL about trying to get 1C for my travel partner. And at check-in, seat 1C was taken, so kept our original seats 1A and 1D. It was fine - no bothersome foot traffic and no galley noise issues.
