Do not close the US cards; Even with Amex you can get back value with UA TB and Uber, wsj, hulu etc etc
im not very sure about the rules, but isnt a US citizen who still have a US address and bank account able to sign up for new credit cards despite living abroad? the only problem maybe getting access to the physical card, but one can time it such that the card arrives when one is back on US soil
