I stayed at the Hotel Spero in SF, the neighbouring restaurant seemed independent, not part of the hotel. But I got a voucher for the "hotel guests breakfast" (4-5 options, probably not full menu for restaurant guests), which was not bad. I wonder why not the Kimpton operates in that way.
