UA operates more flights than they have numbers for, so they go through and shuffle things up regularly. Long-haul routes tend to get less of this; short-haul routes get it all the time. (Additionally if you go from UA to United Express, or vice versa, or change United Express carriers, a number change is mandatory). The days of being able to say "I take flight 1431 home every week" are long gone.

According to Wikipedia, United had 4,100 daily flights as of March 2025. Even if you subtract 9000 and 8000 flights, that still leaves potentially 8,000 numbers, which would seem to be more than enough, so I’m confused…
