The point is, booking close-in is going to lead higher fares on most routes due to advance purchase requirements in the fare rules of cheaper fares. The $12K r/t fares (D fares) have a 14 day advance purchase requirement, so the closest-in they would be available from now would be April 24th.
There are cheaper r/t Z fares on IAD-TYO for $7.5K, but these have a 60 day advance purchase (and 7 day min stay) requirement.
