Check to see if your credit card offers Trip Delay Insurance. Or, the next time you fly, buy it yourself if you need it -- UA will happily offer it to you during checkout. (As with all insurance, read the fine print!). You are correct that US airlines do not participate in the EC.261/UK.261 jackpot program on flights heading to Europe.
Thank you for your reply. Whilst I have delay insurance its not worth claiming because my 'out of pocket' expenses are not huge.
I suppose I am just rather shocked to discover the advantage, I did not know about , of flying with a European based airline. I shall make sure all my family and friends are aware of it now though.
