Gaslamp is in general too loud for me. Of the downtown SD Marriotts, I'm partial to Marquis and SS.
Been happy with the Hotel Republic in the past as well.

The hotel claims that as they only have the 5 suites, they cannot provide any upgrades. No matter that a suite was available for sale for my entire stay, of course ...

A good lesson for me - I typically avoid Design Hotels, and in this case was not paying attention when I booked. Serves me right!
