Gate close vs departure time

For ferries in Hong Kong, the advertised departure time on the timetable is the gate close time. This is simple and intuitive. Why do airlines close the gate well before the advertised departure time, preventing people from boarding flights?

Any time after the gate close should no longer be relevant to the passenger and the plane should have been shown as departed once the door is shut.
