I find the key to getting what you want is knowing what you want before calling in. My experience is that call goes a lot smoother if it starts off with 'here's the booking reference I'm calling about, this is the situation and this is what I need you to do about it'. Way easier for the agent to be in execution mode as opposed to asking them 'what are my alternatives'.
