With overpayment of estimated taxes, I tell the IRS (on my tax return) that I am due a refund. There’s less room for the IRS to delay and/or mess things up.
Overpaying current account due bounces a refund immediately. This is a really common situation when people pay their 2024 account instead of 1Q25 by accident and are confused to get a check in the mail 8 weeks later.
But if you're concerned, make a 2024 extension payment instead and list it on your return, so the return shows the refund due.
