Could #7 have been a pilot, which I believe have something in their contract about getting upgrades if available (higher priority)?

Was the original delay weather related? If not, I would think you could make a case to be refunded some miles (the difference between a couch award and a first class award which you porchased)

Either way, I would submit a complaint through the AA website.
