I have close relatives in that position, who regularly travel between the UK and EU due to family living abroad, and I foresee some significant difficulties. They shouldn't have to apply for an ETA but I fear it may be the 'least worst' option for them.
I always make sure I have an active share code when I travel and will not apply for an ETA. If the airline wants to IDB me, I'll just enjoy an extra day holiday at their expense... Having said that, I do have a printout and screenshots, of both the settled status confirmation letter (yes, the one that says it's not proof of status) and the HO page just in case I really need to get back as scheduled. I don't really anticipate any problems though, but if there are I'll just deal with it then. I'm off to France just after Easter to see family so I'll find out soon enough...
