Based on history from the GFC, if it ever gets to that point, I'd potentially expect some limited promotions to incentivize spend and travel...and probably pricier/higher yield travel at that. What I wouldn't expect are wholesale freebies/handouts like we saw five years ago, as they are still trying to dig themselves out of that mess with the inflation of the elite ranks, overcrowded lounges etc. In some ways this may be less of a downturn and more about accelerating the normalization and reset of pre-pandemic norms.
Will be tough times for airlines then! If the U.S. is headed for recession people will cut travel spending first rapidly. Delta will have to incentivize people and business to use them again. It is odd that Delta is coming out as saying they are seeing a downturn, but not doing anything to combat this and it is only expected to get worse. Sounds like bad management at Delta. Has been nice to have open middles on recent Delta flights! Flights do seem emptier!
