I personally wouldn't raise the ante too much on this. There is an unenforceable argument that you should remain with your guest throughout, but an enforceable argument to prevent them from re-entering without their sponsor. That said, I suspect if they said "I'm just off to Boots for some toothpaste" then I'm sure they would be waved back in with a scan.
