Correct this is normal, although some properties deal with the change is such a way you receive a booking modification email. It's 50/50 in my experience.
Sometimes also, they will claim no one as a clue about what you're talking about when you check in, in which case you would have to deal with getting some money back after your stay, by email with the property (unless you have time to deal with that on the spot)
