I agree with your comments on the SGS, however I actually like the dated but warmer decor there. Upthread I mentioned that I would be happier at the SGS than the BKK Ritz. The SGS has such a level of consistency, service, and execution, it basically delivers everything I seek in an urban hotel and is priced reasonably. I sometimes stay elsewhere in Bangkok for shorter stays because I want a change of pace or want to try something different.
The question then becomes, where does the BKK Ritz stand out? Why would someone choose the Ritz over the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit, or other properties? Just as there's the concept for 7 rings of heaven, there are several levels of luxury. The SGS certainly has a luxurious environment, but perhaps the Ritz has luxury at a higher level. Some may prefer the cool and modern opulence of the BKK Ritz vs the classic but dated warmer decor of the SGS.
There are guests coming to BKK who want the highest levels of luxury and might choose the Ritz over other Marriott Bonvoy hotels. Guests might choose the BKK Ritz when also considering the Mandarin Oriental and some other select luxury hotels by the river. Some business travelers will be able to secure beneficial corporate rates at the BKK Ritz. Business travelers might choose the Ritz because it is a nice hotel and convenient to many offices and the US embassy. For a number of guests, cost and Bonvoy elite inclusions may not be the largest factors when choosing the BKK Ritz.
