As others have pointed out the downside of renting an EV is the requirement to charge it fully on return.
The charging stations on the highways have a more expensive fast charging option (~30minutes), but it is only fast to about 80% of the battery.
I am not sure if you can pay for the charging stations without creating an account with the provider. The rental company does not give you a card you can use (as of 2 years ago, might be more user-friendly now).
Other suggested a train ride to Maastricht - quite a nice option. Then you can rent a car locally in Maastricht and drive around for fun.
An alternative to experience EV's: carsharing provider, for example
Carsharing with MyWheels. Download the app and book a ride
They have decent car models too, not only the size of the night stand, but the real cars. The charging is included. The downside: you must return the car only to the assigned spaces and not in any parking spot like in more user-friendly business models.
Gas prices: 2.15 per liter on the highway, 1.90 elsewhere.
Maastricht is next to Belgium where petrol is at least 20 cents cheaper due to more reasonable taxes. If you are looking for short road-trips, Luxembourg is very picturesque, close to Maastricht, and gas prices are 40 cents lower.
