Hyatt says it's the first Grand brand of Hyatt in Cayman. There was a (not-Grand) Hyatt late 1990's to at least Oct 2001, with Bamboo sushi restaurant (#1 or #2 sushi back then and not that many restaurants. Across the street was a canal, to catch the ferry to Stingray City and tip of the east side of the island. Along one side of the canal were hotel residencies and the other side (street name Palms Bay drive) with houses and small apartment complexes Lived/worked there a few years.

The film The Firm had some scenes shot at/near the former Hyatt hotel.
We stayed at the Hyatt Grand Cayman Resort on my first trip there in 2002! It was a great property. We were booked to stay again the second week of September 2004 when Hurricane Ivan came along and damaged the Hyatt beyond salvage (so lucky we decided at last minute not to take that trip!) It sat there boarded up for several years, reportedly hung up with insurance issues, and I assume was eventually torn down (our last trip was in 2013).

Based on maps, it seems that location was better than where the new Grand Hyatt will be - I don't recall there being much a beach that close to town.
