Several reviews had mentioned lack of passengers on the long haul flights. Should Zip Air cancel my flight or service from SFO are they obligated to put me on another airline in same class of service for transit SFO-NRT? (airline owned by JAL so perhaps?)

Generally speaking, Zip is being reported as quite the successful venture for JAL and they have just announced that they will expand the fleet with 10 787-9 on top of the current expansion plans. But whether the SFO route is doing well I don't know.
I don't know what the requirements between rebooking and refunds are in the US in case of a route cancellation. But as Zip flights are seen as one single service class with two types of seats, is doubt very much you'd be rebooked in business class on JAL, but rather in economy class.
