If I book international award tickets using AA points where the operating airline is Cathay Pacific, will I be able to select seats free of charge in economy class ?

Additional question - I have a HKG-LAX-BOS flight with a 11.5 hr layover from morning to night in LAX. Was hoping they will allow me to check in bags 11 hour prior. Any views?
