As mentioned before, PS isn't known for luxury resorts. Chains like Hyatt, Marriott and Westin have nice resorts in the area but I would not consider them to be luxury hotels. If you want to stay closer to PS town and are open for a more modern (modern boutique/W Hotel type of experience) , I would also look at:

1. Le Parker Meridien Palm Springs - hotel was recently redone by the designer Jonathan Adler - it used to the the Merve Greffen Givenchy Hotel and Spa before it was purchased by the Parker Hotel group and made part of the LeMeridien chain.

2. Viceroy Palm Springs - part of the Kor Hotel group http://www.viceroypalmsprings.com/ (website is VERY SLOW at times!!)

The Viceroy is right in town within walking distance of restaurants and the PS museum. The Le Parker Meridien is a little further out but definitely closer than most of the resorts in Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage, etc.
