What's the rule for combining CX and partner on a basic one-way award?

For instance, the search is offering me MEL-xHKG-HND (CX then JL) as a single itinerary. And I can see, separately, HND-ORD (or some other US ports) on JL available a few hours later. Could I get (say) MEL-xHKG-xHND-ORD (CX, JL, JL) if I called to book?
