Had a three night stay here and am inclined to agree with Kev0 that this hotel has some issues.

We booked a Mount Inasa View room on points and got a somewhat anemic upgrade to a Harbor View room on the 9th floor. The rooms are modern, but the furnishings feel cheap. There's a decent sized balcony, but no furniture on it ... would have been nice to sit out there and enjoy the view. Soundproofing is poor -- one night, we were kept up by the wind howling, and the sliding door does a poor job at keeping out traffic noise.

The club lounge is bizarre. First of all, it doesn't face the harbor, so instead of an amazing view, you overlook the buses next to the JR station. I've been to a handful of hotels where the lounge has an inexplicably poor location (e.g., the former Westin Nagoya with a lounge that faced away from the castle, the crappy Sheraton HK "elite" lounge), but in this case, it's especially dumbfounding. I guess M Clubs are a bit of an afterthought at Marriotts? The lounge offerings are pretty basic. Three hot items (fried stuff: fish and chips, fried chicken), some crudite and three small plates with single-bites of pate or salmon. Plus a few desserts and fruits. The lounge is several notches below Sheraton Kagoshima. We didn't have any problems with overcrowding, but there were signs asking guests to limit their visits to 60 minutes. Now, we come to Japan to sample local foods, so in a way, a weak lounge is a good thing for us, and I don't think we spent more than 20 minutes here. Breakfast was offered at the restaurant. It's a good selection, decent quality, pleasant atmosphere. No complaints at all, although I also wouldn't call it memorable.

All that said, I am happy to have Western chains available in lesser locations in Japan. I have spent countless nights in off-the-beaten-path locations, where Solarias, Richmonds, Comfort hotels are the only option. Standard rooms are 140sqft (or you can pay a little more for their top-of-the-line 180sqft room), it's no frills, no waivers no favors, check-in time is 3pm and if you arrive at 2:30pm please take a seat and wait. Even (often middling) Crowne Plazas are a godsend in those locations, and places like Sheraton Kagoshima or Marriott Nagasaki are amazing. In Nagasaki, I may try the new Indigo next time, which looks like a better hotel than the Marriott, although the location is less ideal.
