What is the current situation regarding e-Visas and VOA?

If I understand everything correctly the VOA is roughly 1/10 the price of an e-Visa (6250 MT vs. 650 MT) and requires seemingly less documentation - any reason not to choose the VOA option? We'll be flying in to VNX from JNB on German passports
