These are also on the same PNR, so that's another variable to consider beyond it being JFK. For reference, this is AA 107 (arriving at 8pm) and AA 179 (departing at 7:59am).
It's not reliable, or in other words, all a phone agent can do is just confirm the AA policy in that you should be able to drop it off overnight.

But, if there are ground agents working the recheck desk at LAX that refuse to take overnight bags (as was kangarooflyer's experience above) then there's not much you can do, policy or not.
