Courgette surprise

Just had the worst Club World food and drink I can remember on last night's BA42 CPT-LHR. Very poor service didn't help. Clearly BA is having to 'pay' for the reversal of Brunchgate by finding savings elsewhere, in this instance by making us eat butternut squash and courgette.

Starter was a choice of vegetable salad, courgette soup or butternut squash with courgette. I went for the squash but as a cold dish it tasted raw and chewy and I managed only a couple of mouthfuls. The jelly just tasted weird.

Main was lamb meatballs, seafood curry or, er, courgette and butternut squash. As a GGL in row 10 I was informed the lamb had run out, so I had the curry which turned out to come with ... courgette! It was dry and contained more chili than seafood. Side salad was just raw edaname beans, carrot and cabbage, no balsamic or sauce whatsoever.

Had the milk tart for dessert, which was decent if small, but not much sign of the advertised vanilla sauce.

Once again the welcome 'glass' of champagne was shrunk to a thimble.

This was the 8.40pm flight, not the 10pm, yet the crew skipped the first drinks run and just started bringing out the meal trays. I had chosen the chenin blanc when ordering, yet the crew gave me champagne with the starter. At least it was a full glass and I was happy to try.

45 more minutes went by and with the starter still sitting in front of me and no sign of the main course I pressed the call bell for a drink, which was ignored. Pressed again, ignored. So I got up and went to the galley where I was clearly unwelcome (perhaps understandably given how difficult it is to get so many meals out). "We're busy with the meals". So I went back to economy, where the very efficient and friendly crew had completed the clear-in and were happy to hand over a sauvignon blanc.

I later discovered that the chenin blanc hadn't been loaded and the substitute was, bizarrely, a vinho verde ... not really something I'd expect with a meal in Club World. Hard to tell if the crew were aware of the substitution and hoped nobody would notice or whether they didn't even realise. IFL didn't even introduce himself over the PA never mind in person, and was entirely absent during the flight. No drinks proactively offered at any point - the only one offered was the first one that came with the meal. Pretty shoddy experience all round.
