For east coast US people like me, you can do YUL-PHL/JFK/IAD-DOH-CMB with a long stopover on the east coast, even with a surface sector. It goes up to ~$1511 but in theory you could take a summer trip to Montreal and then fly to Colombo in the fall/winter. Fares to Canada this summer are cheap for the one way.
