In order to check your bag through to your final destination, UA creates a dummy record in their system that represents the long-haul flight. UA then computes the baggage charges based upon whatever it now thinks the itinerary is. In the situation you describe, I would expect it to offer you the UA J baggage allowance, plus one *G bag.
