I got confused with the seatmap - yes, the two aisle seats are the alternates for the forward jumpseats (1D, then 1C - i.e., right side #1, left side #2).
I was nervous for a bit because my next pair of flights both had precisely 1C and 1D available, and it happens to be the same aircraft. But once I stepped inside the first flight, there was no sign, and the seats were taken.
