If the forward flight attendant jumpseat is inoperative for whatever reason, they are supposed to sit in 1C during critical phases of flight and anytime it is unsafe to be standing. 1B is the alternate if 1C is broken. Not sure why 1D was also blocked but perhaps it is an AS-specific policy.
Luck would have it that my connecting flight happened to be the same aircraft. On my way in I asked the two flight attendants standing by the cockpit why no one is sitting in 1C and 1D, and the answer was the front jumpseats were broken. Of course they also asked out of curiosity how I knew.
The two did sit in the seats during takeoff, although probably not much until landing. One is working in First, the other in Main.
Unfortunately for this flight it meant that I didn’t upgraded. Was #1 on the waitlist.
