Actually starting from TPA. So TPA-IAD/DCA-EWR-JNB. Sorry for the confusion. There are TPA-EWR non-stops and TPA-IAD-EWR routings but this is the one that Google shows (and is available on the United Site). I have a similar situation on AA where the best fare is to switch airports between LGW and LHR (a very long layover too). Thanks for the help.
Travelling between IAD and DCA has become much easier in recent years, now that the Washington Metro has been extended to (and beyond) Dulles Airport. From Dulles, take the Silver Line (the only line that serves that airport) to the Rosslyn station and change within that underground station to the Blue Line, which will bring you to National Airport. You need to allow sufficient time, but the trip is quite simple, everything is well marked, and trains run every few minutes. Both airports are in Virginia, as is Rosslyn, so there is no need for you to go into the city of Washington.
