From the email I got this morning, spend from January 1 should count. I am in the same position - I see the old 5k award rebates in my United account, but nothing related to the new 10k rebates.

Mrs. Lifer's card anniversary is at the beginning of October, and she used both 5K certificates that month, on two one-way awards (outbound and return).
She is looking forward to a 10K certificate on her anniversary (or two, if she spends $20K by then).
