I also heard that KIX is easier to upgrade but was also skeptical because it the flight I am looking at only has 20J seats. So this kind of confirms my suspicion that the KIX being easier to upgrade is probably not general advice.

PY Flex gives you the ability to upgrade at anytime should space be available, whereas PY Lowest you're limited by your upgrade clearance window. It's possible that an upgrade is available right now for PY Flex.

Hm yes, I heard about that as well but from what I gathered so far, it seems very unlikely to get an early upgrade on these route.

I have a 20% discount code and I believe it was closer to 450$ more but yeah, I think regular was 500$ more for flex which does not seem too bad. I have seen this difference for a bunch of flights in Fall to KIX.
