I don't have any knowledge about making changes after booking. Not sure a schedule change would reliably warrant a change in the routing.

For $6K, DCA->IAD is not a very bad transfer at all. About 1 hour on the Metro, with one line change. Pretty easy.
I would much rather have that than the EWR->JFK transfer, which is more lengthy and convoluted.
