I suppose it depends on your definition of "fair."
Was it worth the hours on the phone over many days with multiple reps not believing me at both companies, stress of potentially devastating my credit report, card being blocked, and in the context of going out of town within a week? NO.
However, both companies offered more than what I've typically seen reported in service recovery situations, which I think is fair given this was a bigger than usual service recovery. The value of the compensation is more than the interest I would have earned for $100K in 1 week in a HYSA, and in the range of what WN and DL offered to affected pax during their respective meltdowns.
