I'll add that JAL's website works much better for selecting seats on AS reward bookings than JAL's app. I find JAL's app rarely if ever works for seat selections.
I've never had an issue, and have always been able to access seat selection through JAL's website immediately after booking.
Much like with StarLux, Reward bookings have zero issues selecting seats. The issue appears to come from when you purchase direct through Alaska. The systems as explained to me do not properly talk with each other preventing you from picking the seat in advance. From what I can tell this is more of Alaska booking into a Fare Class that is not eligible for advance seat selection. Likely why Alaska is giving essentially double EQMs...... sympathy prize for last minute seat selection. Its annoying, and a known issue/feature, and yet Alaska refuses to note these restrictions on their website.
