If you earn a credit while the card is open and then close it, American Express is not required to pay it. The Gold card terms state: If the Card Account is cancelled or past due, it may not qualify to receive a statement credit. However, closed accounts can still receive debits and credits, and we have reports of promotional credits posting to closed card accounts.
