Thanks for the response. Yes, I've realized this as well. The paid seat assignment options promptly disappeared on the LH side when I made the UA upgrade request. Fortunately I had already selected seats on the LH site and was holding off on paying until the UA agent gave me the all-clear (it was a weird day when UA's receipt system was under maintenance and slow to generate e-ticket receipts).

Well, I don't expect the LH upgrade offers to drop significantly in price until a few weeks before the flight. I do want the UA upgrade request to clear, so I will keep it for now. I guess I just have to hope that when I fly the UA segment and the waitlisted segment goes away and there is only the LH-operated return flight left, the LH system will again see this as a regular reservation and offer me the cash upgrade options. If anyone knows of any way to fix things if the upgrade option does not reappear on the LH side after the UA segment is flown, please let me know!
