That is definitely a good strategy. Early in my transatlantic flying days I took the earliest of the non-daytime flights out of IAD to LHR (in economy) which arrived super-early to Heathrow and making it through that first day was brutal, even on my then late 20s self. Nowadays, that would be almost impossible on my late 40s self.
