There's definitely a market. I'm going with friends on a cruise this summer and we all just paid about this much from various cities. It's a once a year trip so it's worth it to us to just spend what we need to be comfortable. The way I look at it is Premium Economy was about $2K less. It's worth it to me $1K each way extra to have the better seat -- ie, I'm only spending $2K more than I otherwise would have anyway, not $5-6K.
I definitely wouldn't pay what they want for premium economy in hopes I might be able to upgrade. The difference on those has been only a few hundred dollars so it's definitely not worth the downgrade. My post was mostly that these were astronomically more expensive than it used to be even compared to the past 2 years. I suppose maybe there is demand or that's just their early pricing and they'll come down as prices come down. I found a premium economy redemption for 40K miles that wasn't bad, but then you can't buy up. I'll probably end up booking on another airline since I've found some better prices on others.
