There are (at least) 3 different distinct scenarios at play:
- What AC can/will sell you: Almost anything. Theortetically you could call up AC and they could sell you a ticket YUL-CDG on AF... Not that one would want-to or try, of course.
- What AC can rebook after a schedule change: Schedule change removes the fare-code barrier and usually allows changes as long as there is room in the same cabin, or lower, but I beleive they are still limited as to the options, without someone higher up getting involved. I once had a schedule change that left be with a -23 hour connection and after many hours on hold, was offered flying a day earlier or refund, and no comp for an extra night's hotel.
- What AC can book in the case of IRROPs - literally almost anything depending on the situation and their 'motivation' to do so. Obviously YMMV but I've seen a few instances where I went...Whoa..I didn't know they could do that.
