Any recent personal experiences pro or con would be appreciated.

I've stayed in North Charleston Marriott this year and in the Marriott last year.
The actual Marriott is in my opinion in an most urgent need of renovation. The rooms and bathrooms are super dated. Staff did only the necessary thing. Got vouchers for the actual restaurant as the lounge wasn't open and the breakfast is forgettable (more what you would like to expect from a M Club). There's not much to do where it is. I won't be back, especially not for the outrageous rates they sometimes like to charge.
The N C Marriott wasn't too bad. Got a fully renovated room and it's close to the airport. Staff wasn't overly friendly either but you will be fairly quickly downtown with an Uber. The food at the bar was good at the evening. M Club small, and ok, had issues to find a seat sometimes. The only issue was for us that a fighter jet did some training touch and goes in the middle of a Saturday night when we were there. Otherwise, no issues.
I would defo go with the N C Marriott, it provides probably the best value across all the Charleston hotels. Of course downtown is better, but completely in a different price class. The actual Marriott is a dumpster.
