Be very careful with these vehicles that have a smoke or pot smell. Some years back I decided I would not accept vehicles with significant "odor" anymore. I know, good luck. But I have had pretty good luck. I had one rental recently where I was in a hurry and just accepted the pot smell. I usually try to do some things to mitigate moderate odors inside rental vehicles including opening the windows, running a/c a lot, putting a paper bag or two torn down so it is shallow and covered with baking soda in the back seat, to try to mitigate this. Sometimes these tactics actually work.
However this one vehicle my mitigation attempts failed. I would think the smell was getting better, but it just wasn't. It seemed to get better as I was driving then after the car was parked it came back so strong. I just could not make the smell go and the smell kept permeating from the back seat, it was so strong in the morning I almost fell over getting into the car. My clothes all stunk, yet the seat was clearly clean. I was very confused. I went into the trunk. Looked clean. Lifted up under the trunk around the spare tire; tons of pot dried up/stuck to that metal surface where the tire rests and other loose scraps down there. Returned that car immediately.
