I don't see anywhere where it says a soft drop will last 12 months.
But your case is different because you would cease to be gold after the change to the membership year, so any future membership would expire around the next membership year end (with a month grace). OP described a situation where they would have started as silver in March, before the changes, so the validity of the card would continue.
