As @azepine00 says it depends what you want from your vacation.

Our family love the beach, the pool and SoCal sun- so we default to Aviara. Beach is no more than a 5 min drive away. It is a bonus that there is Legoland or San Diego Safari Park close (safari park is a bit of a drive tbf- we don't spend more than a day at either and won't go every time we visit- its a treat for our kids and they are starting to outgrow each. Our trips are mainly spent on the beach and by the pool with Nick's on State for dinner.

If you enjoy the mountains, and being relatively remote then Tahoe is for you.
